Sunday March 25th is national ‘Neighbour Day’ and it is fast approaching. Each year since 2003 Australia celebrates ‘Neighbour Day’ on the last Sunday of March. Neighbour Day is Australia’s annual celebration of community, bringing together the people next door, across the street or on the next farm for a beer, a barbie or just a cuppa. Last year, ACT Neighbourhood Watch decided that ‘Neighbour Day’ is the perfect day to say thanks to everyday people who are great neighbours; people who are there when others need them most. So, in 2011 we awarded our inaugural ACT NHW Good Neighbour Award to Mr George and Mrs Rose Cooper seen pictured above with Superintendent Flower. They were nominated by their next door neighbour Debbie, who simply downloaded a nomination form, filled it in and sent it to The Secretary; ACT Neighbourhood Watch Association Inc. The ACT has remained the only jurisdiction in Australia to record zero road deaths over the Christmas-New Year period. Acting Superintendent of Traffic Operations Jeff Knight said this is a pleasing result for police and the community as a whole, following on from recording the lowest road toll in more than 50 years in the ACT in 2011. “As part of Operation Crossroads which took place between Friday December 23 and Tuesday January 3, we had a strong focus on the fatal five – drink/drug driving, speeding, non use of seatbelts, fatigue and driver distraction,” he said. “In this time police conducted 4357 random and targeted breath tests on motorists in the ACT, with 56 drivers recording positive readings. Last year 41 drivers returned positive readings. Removing drink and drug affected drivers off our road reduces the risk of serious collisions and fatalities occurring,” said Acting Superintendent Knight. ACT NHW…

One of the desired strategic outcomes in ACT Neighbourhood Watch’s Strategic Plan is “To Develop and Sustain a Viable Relationship with the ACT Community. The increased visibility of the organization, its aims and objectives has been served well by this web site and social networking technologies; all designed to give a greater profile but we must continue to take opportunities to be present and accessible in the places where people go. A few weeks ago we reported that this year’s Woden Festival was a terrific success and that the presence of NHW was not only significant but well received. Last weekend was no exception with volunteers from across the active NHW areas of Gungahlin setting up a display and access point at the venue for this year’s Christmas in Gungahlin Party sponsored annually by the Land Development Agency ACT. By all accounts it was a steady day for recruiting and…
ACT NHW Association Inc. has acquired its first central office in the 27 years of its existence as a part of the Canberra community. This is not to say that NHW hasn’t previously had genuine administrative support from its partners from time to time, particularly ACT Policing, however, it is the first time that the association which is completely governed by civilian volunteers, has had a ‘headquarters’ type office space and a visible presence where the Board of Management can locate and house the organization.   Entering into a landmark Memorandum of Understanding with the Havelock Housing Association Inc. and with the help of terrific people like Loc Luu and Mike Kinniburgh, the ACT NHW Board is steadily organizing the dedicated office space and lounge, located at Havelock House, 85 Northbourne Avenue Turner (just north of the Canberra CBD) It is a work in progress and the public is welcome to…
