Neighbourhood Watch in the ACT is a completely voluntary organization. It is people from all walks of life, working together, promoting community spirit and simply sharing the care for what happens where they live, work and play.
Neighbourhood Watch provides a community voice regarding crime reduction by improving communication lines between the police and the public for better reporting and better quality in information shared about crime and suspicious activity. It also distributes crime prevention and reduction messages via newsletters and online technologies; helping promote safety, security and well being.
Neighbourhood Watch began around the world in the 1970’s. It commenced in Australia in 1982 and in the ACT in 1984. It has since become Australia’s largest community based crime prevention programme. So much so, that it formed a partnership with New Zealand and in 2006 incorporated Neighbourhood Watch Australasia. The ACT NHW association is a member and plays a significant role in the Australasia network.
